Arrested or charged with a crime in West Bloomfield Township? Your case will almost certainly begin in the 48th District Court, and you need a West Bloomfield criminal defense lawyer who knows that court. Police charged our client with felonious assault after the complainant claimed our client swung a hammer at him. In Michigan, that felony carries up to four years in prison. We obtained and carefully reviewed the Ring camera footage of the incident. The video told a different story: our client was holding a hammer while talking to the complainant, but never swung it toward him. We filed a motion to dismiss based on that evidence, and the court granted it, dismissing the felony charge.
Why this matters: Home security footage from Ring, Nest, and business cameras can be overwritten or deleted. Bringing in a defense lawyer early gives you the best chance to find and preserve evidence like this before it’s gone.

Christopher Brown appears in the 48th District Court often. We know how this court works: its procedures, its expectations, and how its judges approach bond, plea negotiations, and sentencing. That knowledge helps us avoid unnecessary mistakes and present each client’s case in the way most likely to be heard. When the facts call for a fight, we prepare for one. When the best path is a strong mitigation presentation, showing the court who our client is beyond the charge, we build it with this court in mind.
The 48th District Court handles most misdemeanors from start to finish, including first-offense drunk driving, retail fraud, and domestic violence charges. Arraignment, pretrial conference, plea or trial, and sentencing all happen there.
Felony cases also start at the 48th District Court with an arraignment and a preliminary examination. If the judge binds the case over, it moves to the Oakland County Circuit Court in Pontiac. Learn more about Oakland County criminal defense and the Circuit Court process.
Getting a lawyer involved early matters. The judge sets bond conditions at arraignment. The district court stage, before bindover, is often the best chance to challenge weak evidence. As the result above shows, some felony charges can be dismissed before they ever reach the Circuit Court.
West Bloomfield is one of the most lake-filled communities in Oakland County, and the lakes are patrolled in summer. The Oakland County Sheriff’s Marine Division patrols lakes across the county, including Cass Lake. Deputies step up enforcement for impaired boating around holidays such as the Fourth of July. In Michigan, operating a boat while intoxicated is a criminal offense, separate from a traffic OWI, and it can bring jail time, fines, and the loss of boating privileges. If police stopped you on the water, we review the stop, the testing, and the officer’s report just as carefully.
The West Bloomfield Township Police Department makes most arrests in the township. The other communities served by the 48th District Court have their own departments, including the Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Bloomfield Township, Orchard Lake Village, and Sylvan Lake police departments. The Michigan State Police patrol nearby highways, and the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office handles lake patrols.
As a former Detroit police officer (1996–2003), Christopher Brown knows how officers write reports and run investigations, and where those investigations go wrong.
Because these communities share the 48th District Court, we also defend clients charged in Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Bloomfield Township, Keego Harbor, Orchard Lake Village, and Sylvan Lake.
